Rights of Passage / Apartment Living/ Genesis Program

The Rights of Passage Program is designed for those homeless youth diagnosed with a Mental Health or Substance Abuse problem but are stable enough with supervision for independent living.   The staff will do Case Management for each youth regarding medical appointments, employment, and education. This new program enables young adults to make the transition toward independence over the period of five years. Youth can leave the program when they feel confident in their ability to live on their own. T

Planned Giving
Most people would like to leave their mark on the world-to do something that leaves the earth a better place to live. Every day, Covenant House Georgia makes the world better by helping lost kids pull their lives together. Your contributions make a statement about your compassion for them. Why not leave your mark on the world by continuing your support for our kids through your estate plan? You'll make the world a better place for generations to come.

  • Consider a bequest: Gifts through your will or living trust provide a testament to your love and compassion for our kids.
  • Give life insurance: You can name Covenant House Georgia as a beneficiary of a policy, or contribute an old policy that you no longer need.
  • Gift retirement plan assets: Your estate may save both income tax and estate tax if you make Covenant House Georgia a beneficiary of your IRA or other retirement account.

For information about any of these opportunities, please call Yvonne Forbes Director of  Development  404-589-0163 x108.

Gift of Stock
A gift of appreciated stock to Covenant House Georgia can not only help provide essential services for homeless youth, but can also provide tax benefits for the donor. If you have appreciated stock that you have owned for over a year and give it to CHGA as a charitable contribution, you may be eligible to receive the following benefits:

  • an income tax deduction on the appreciated value of the stock. If you paid $500 for a stock that is now worth $1,000, you would receive an income tax deduction based on the $1,000 value.
  • a savings on capital gains taxes. If you sold the stock, you would have to pay capital gains taxes-in some instances, as much as 28%. By gifting the stock directly to Covenant House, you avoid this costly tax.

If you have stocks that have decreased in value since you have owned them, it may be beneficial to sell them and make a deductible gift of the cash proceeds. In doing so, you will have a loss that you may be able to deduct from taxable income along with your cash contribution. In some instances the combined deduction on the loss and the charitable contribution may be worth more than the current value of the stock.

For information about any of these opportunities, please call Yvonne Forbes, Director of Development 404-589-0163 x108.

In-Kind Donations
Clothing and Household Needs
Clothing for Older Teens and Babies: We are always in need of clothing for the kids who come through our doors each day. Donations of gently-worn clothing appropriate for teenagers, babies and toddlers are greatly appreciated.

Professional Attire: There is a constant need for professional attire for young adults who reside at Covenant House Georgia. Unlike other 16 to 21-year-olds who may be going to college and have the support of their families, our older residents are struggling just to keep a roof over their heads. All of the young adults in our program are expected to be employed or be actively seeking employment. However, these kids have little or no money to purchase clothing, especially costly professional attire. Most rely entirely on donations of gently-worn clothing for jobs and interviews. Please drop off these items only at 72 Board Street SW.  Atlanta, GA 30303. Contact 404-688-4717 for additional information.

Household Items: Residents in our Rights of Passage Program programs need basic household items. In addition, we assist former Covenant House Georgia residents who are making the transition to independent living with household basics. We are grateful for donations of used (and new!) items such as towels, blankets, sheets, beds, mattresses, kitchen utensils, appliances, furniture, telephones, televisions, etc.

Other Needs: Winter coats, diapers, office supplies, and canned goods.

We also accept your car or truck! If you have a car or truck that you would like to donate to Covenant House Georgia, please visit www.centerforcardonation.org. This is a free service to you and you will receive a tax reciept and they will even tow it for you. It's that simple.

You can also help by using Goodsearch.com. Goodsearch is a charitable search engine that donates one penny to your selected charity each time you perform a search. Help give to Covenant House Georgia without spending a dime!
